The Pirelli Internetional Award to become a sleeping initiative

The Twelfth Edition ends:

The Twelfth Edition of the Pirelli INTERNETional Award, the award dedicated to the communication of scientific and technological culture on the web has ended. The award ceremony was held over the past few days in Rome, at the Pirelli offices in the capital city.

Conti, enchanted by Google Earth, proposed to the Californian search engine's engineers the development of software to visualize the universe as seen from Earth. Hence, Google Sky. A kind of telescope to explore the galaxies that is available to everyone.

Thanks to this project, the Italian scientist and his collegues Matt Kaiser and Josh Perlow, won not only the award for the category Information & Communication Technology, but also the Top Pirelli Prize, an award bestowed by the jury for the best work among all categories in the contest.

Indeed, since 1996, Pirelli has bestowed awards every year to the best multimedia presentations having as their main theme the diffusion of science and technology in the physics, chemistry, mathematics, life sciences and Information & Communication Technology categories.

In addition, to promote greater participation from Italian authors, the Premio Pirelli per l'Italia, subdivided into two categories Senior and Junior, offered two €10,000 awards reserved for Italian citizens who authored highly innovative science communication projects.

  La dodicesima Edizione del Pirelli INTERNETional Award, il premio dedicato alla comunicazione della cultura scientifica e tecnologica via web, si è conclusa. La cerimonia di premiazione si è svolta nei giorni scorsi a Roma, presso la sede Pirelli della capitale.

Massimo Armeni, responsabile dell’ INTERNETional Pirelli Award, ha consegnato il premio all’astronomo italiano Alberto Conti, scienziato dello Space telescope science institute di Baltimora.

Conti, incantato da Google Earth, ha proposto agli ingegneri del motore di ricerca californiano di sviluppare un software per visualizzare l’universo visto dalla Terra. Google Sky, appunto. Una sorta di telescopio a portata di tutti per esplorare le galassie.

Grazie a questo progetto, lo scienziato italiano e i suoi colleghi Matt Kaiser and Josh Perlow, si sono aggiudicati non solo il premio per la categoria Information & Communication Technology, ma anche il Top Pirelli Prize, premio conferito dalla giuria al miglior lavoro tra tutte le categorie in gara.

Dal 1996 in poi, infatti, Pirelli ha conferito ogni anno dei premi alle migliori presentazioni multimediali aventi come tema principale la diffusione della scienza e della tecnologia nelle categorie della fisica, chimica, matematica, scienze della vita e Information&Communication Technology.

Inoltre, per incentivare la partecipazione di autori italiani, il Premio Pirelli per l’Italia, suddiviso in due categorie Senior e Junior, ogni anno metteva in palio due premi del valore di 10.000€ riservati a cittadini italiani ideatori di progetti di comunicazione scientifica altamente innovativi.
