Toward a Nobel Award for Science Communication President Marco Tronchetti Provera introduces the Award The Pirelli Internetional Award is the world’s first Internet multimedia award aimed at the diffusion of scientific and technological culture worldwide. Internet multimedia is a broad field that covers any interactive audio visual format that is electronically transmissible. It extends beyond simple websites to include all digital interactive information delivery products and processes such as flash animations, CD-ROMs, WAP and even email attachments. It was conceived in 1994, developed in 1995 and launched in 1996. To our knowledge, it is the first international competition of its kind on the Web. Awards are granted every calendar year to the best multimedia presentations that concern one of the main themes for the diffusion of science and technology: multimedia oriented toward physics, chemistry, mathematics, life sciences and our Next Internet Award that is specifically intended to recognize and promote science communication conducted on emerging online communication platforms that go beyond the simple website, such as video clips on YouTube, stands within 3D metaverses or even particularly fascinating MySpace pages, Google blogs or Wikipedia projects. For the current edition, the overall budget prize is 115,000 euro (about US$ 130,000). The Pirelli Internetional Award is part of the E-Pirelli Project initiative aimed at orienting the Pirelli Group toward emerging communication technologies, the Internet in particular. We believe that the diffusion of social, economic and technological advances are as important as their discovery. Thus, the medium, Communication, is ripe for recognition. As in 1968, when Economics was recognized by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as a fundamental actor in the social and political development of the world, the time for Communication has come: the Pirelli Internetional Award is intended to be only the first step.
