The Pirelli Award publishes the DVD containing the best works of the "Pirelli Relativity Challenge" and the book "Communicating Physics"
The year 2005 has been declared by UNESCO to be the "World Year of Physics", but from the very beginning its promoters and the international scientific community have hoped to increase the impact and success of this initiative beyond this date.
The Pirelli group adheres to this philosophy that looks toward the future relationship between science and society and promotes an always greater diffusion of physics with the public.
For this reason, next to the special award, "Pirelli Relativity Challenge", launched in 2005, the group has promoted two further activities that go in this direction:
Creation of a DVD that presents the “Pirelli Relativity Challenge” winners and the best runners up that, we believe, is an educational tool that helps students and science enthusiasts of all
ages to understand the theory of restricted relativity, one of the scientific totems of the twentieth century.
Publishing the book “Communicating Physics”, developed in collaboration with the University of Trento, with the purpose of combining a scientific study on public perception of physics with an analysis of physics communication on the internet. Our effort has been to evaluate the existing demand for knowledge in the area of pysics and provide a panorama of its available supply on the web.
Through these initiatives the Pirelli group intends to become more visible in its desire to contribute to the diffusion of knowledge and scientific skills.
In this context, a series of parallel activities is under consideration in the fields of life sciences, chemistry, mathematics and ICT. Each would be accompanied by the launch of a special prize to encourage science communicators and researchers from all over the world to offer their contribution in this field.
